Vietnam Fun Cup 2012 - Windsurf race in Mui Ne

Vietnam Fun Cup is a windsurf race happening in Mui Ne and organized by Jibe's Beach Club for amateurs. There were a total of 25 participants who registered including 3 women and 6 nationalities.
 
For the first day of the race, the wind was just perfect; around 18 knots all day and constant. The sea was just wavy and choppy enough to bring some spice to the race. Each competitor could join 3 races. During the first day, the competitors were divided in 3 groups for men and 1 for women. The top 4 of each group are qualified for the super final during day 2.
 
This year (2012), the race started from the water and the process was similar as the one for the professional. Tricky but exciting for the competitors to feel they are like professional. Here is the way it works. The race “route” has a “N” shape and the a boat is marking starting line. 5 minutes before the start, one person on the boat will raise a red flag so racers can get ready. 1 minutes before the start, a yellow flag is raised, then competitors are positioning themselves and start accelerating in order to cross the departure line with full speed as the green flag is raised marking the start of the race. At the end of the racing route, another boat is checking the order of arrival.
 
Whatever your result is, the best part is the party in the evening at the end of the Fun Cup starting with a big barbecue and ending with people dancing. Some professional windsurfers are around preparing for the PWA World Tour. They are training and testing products. I must say that it is quite inspiring watching them.
 
And if you are not a windsurfer, I am sure you will enjoy the show and the party … 
 
The event is sponsored by hotels, restaurants and some companies around Mui Ne. The main sponsor is an international company named Shneider Electric which has a branch in Vietnam. The prizes are very nice, it includes windsurf equipment, golf vouchers, hotel vouchers … The benefits are given for charity activities.
 
Let's hope that the 13th edition of the Vietnam Fun Cup will be as fun as the past ones. The first day has been promising.
